Adaptive blind equalization using weighted cumulant slices

    Get PDF
Many linear methods have been proposed in the literature to blindly estimate the ARMA parameters of a time series using HOS. Nevertheless, they are mainly off-line and not much has been done in the adaptive case. The method proposed in this contribution is the adaptive version of the w-slice method. The recursion is based on the inversion lemma when attempting the solution of an undetermined matrix equation. The system impulse response can be recovered regardless of the ARMA or MA character of the system. The number of operations depends on the square of the system order and it is considerably reduced with respect to previous approaches. Application to channel deconvolution is shown.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Analytic performance evaluation of cumulant-based arma system identification methods

    Get PDF
The authors perform an analytic study of some cumulant-based methods for estimating the AR parameters of ARMA processes. The analysis includes new AR identifiability results for pure AR process and the analytic performance evaluation of system identification methods based on cumulants. The authors present examples of pure AR processes that are not identifiable via the normal equations based on the diagonal third-order cumulant slice. The results of the performance evaluation are illustrated graphically with plots of the variance of the estimates as a function of the parameters of the process.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Cramer-Rao bounds in the estimation of time of arrival in fading channels

    Get PDF
This paper computes the Cramer-Rao bounds for the time of arrival estimation in a multipath Rice and Rayleigh fading scenario, conditioned to the previous estimation of a set of propagation channels, since these channel estimates (correlation between received signal and the pilot sequence) are sufficient statistics in the estimation of delays. Furthermore, channel estimation is a constitutive block in receivers, so we can take advantage of this information to improve timing estimation by using time and space diversity. The received signal is modeled as coming from a scattering environment that disperses the signal both in space and time. Spatial scattering is modeled with a Gaussian distribution and temporal dispersion as an exponential random variable. The impact of the sampling rate, the roll-off factor, the spatial and temporal correlation among channel estimates, the number of channel estimates, and the use of multiple sensors in the antenna at the receiver is studied and related to the mobile subscriber positioning issue. To our knowledge, this model is the only one of its kind as a result of the relationship between the space-time diversity and the accuracy of the timing estimation.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Optimum Watermark Detection and Embedding in Digital Images

    Get PDF
This work concentrates on the problem of watermarking of still images using the luminance component, through the use of spread spectrum techniques, both in space (direct sequence spread spectrum or DSSS) and frequency (frequency hopping or FH), following the guidelines of Delaigle et al. (1998). The system described is able to embed watermarks and recover them with zero probability of error. The problem is faced from a statistical detection point of view through the analysis of the density function of the image to be marked. A Cauchy model is found to be very accurate and some tests are performed in order to assess improved detection quality. The resulting system turns out to be easy to encrypt and very robust to filtering and JPEG compression.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Space-Time diversity for NLOS mitigation in TDOA-based positioning systems

    Get PDF
This paper studies the potential impact of using space-Time information in the mitigation of the Non-LineOf-Sight condition in mobile subscriber's positioning systems. First of all, this work discusses the positioning problem based on measures of Time Differences Of Arrival departing from a more exact characterization of the signal statistics and including some geometrical restrictions to achieve an improved accurate. Furthermore, a novel approach that integrates signal propagation characteristics to information provided by a suitable timing estimation model based on Cramer Rao Bound for a Rayleigh-fading channel, when antenna arrays are used at the receiver and when a set ofchannel vector estimates are available, has been introduced to study the positive benefits of space-Time diversity. These approaches are evaluated within a realistic simulation scenario.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Recent works have proposed schemes improving the DoF knowledge of the interference channel, but at the cost of developing transmission involving many channel uses (long delay), thus increasing the complexity at both transmitter and receiver side. This paper proposes three linear precoding strategies, limited to at most three phases, based on the concept of interference alignment, and built upon three main ingredients: delayed CSIT precoding, user scheduling, and redundancy transmission. In this respect, the interference alignment is realized by exploiting delayed CSIT to align the interference at the non-intended receivers along the space-time domain. Moreover, a new framework is proposed where the number of transmitted symbols and duration of the phases is obtained as the solution of a maximization problem, and enabling the introduction of complexity constraints, which allows deriving the achievable DoF as a function of the transmission delay, i.e., the achievable DoF-delay trade-off. Finally, the latter part of this paper settles that the assumption of time-varying channels common along all the literature on delayed CSIT is indeed unnecessary.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Duration modeling with expanded HMM applied to speech recognition

    Get PDF
The occupancy of the HMM states is modeled by means of a Markov chain. A linear estimator is introduced to compute the probabilities of the Markov chain. The distribution function (DF) represents accurately the observed data. Representing the DF as a Markov chain allows the use of standard HMM recognizers. The increase of complexity is negligible in training and strongly limited during recognition. Experiments performed on acoustic-phonetic decoding shows how the phone recognition rate increases from 60.6 to 61.1. Furthermore, on a task of database inquires, where phones are used as subword units, the correct word rate increases from 88.2 to 88.4.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Fir system identification using a linear combination of cumulants

    Get PDF
A general linear approach to identifying the parameters of a moving average (MA) model from the statistics of the output is developed. It is shown that, under some constraints, the impulse response of the system can be expressed as a linear combination of cumulant slices. This result is then used to obtain a new well-conditioned linear method to estimate the MA parameters of a nonGaussian process. The proposed approach does not require a previous estimation of the filter order. Simulation results show improvement in performance with respect to existing methods.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Permission from IEEE must be obtained for all other uses, in any current or future media, including reprinting/republishing this material for advertising or promotional purposes, creating new collective works, for resale or redistribution to servers or lists, or reuse of any copyrighted component of this work in other works.Recent results have elucidated the benefits of using improper Gaussian signaling (IGS) as compared to conventional proper Gaussian signaling (PGS) in terms of achievable rate for interference-limited conditions. This paper exploits majorization theory tools to formally quantify the gains of IGS along with widely linear transceivers for MIMO systems in interferencelimited scenarios. The MIMO point-to-point channel with interference (P2P-I) is analyzed, assuming that received interference can be either proper or improper, and we demonstrate that the use of the optimal IGS when received interference is improper strictly outperforms (in terms of achievable rate and mean square error) the use of the optimal PGS when interference is proper. Then, these results are extended to two practical situations. First, the MIMO Z-interference channel (Z-IC) is investigated, where a trade-off arises: with IGS we could increase the achievable rate of the interfered user while gracefully degrading the rate of the non-interfered user. Second, these concepts are applied to a two-tier heterogeneous cellular network (HCN) where macrocells and smallcells coexist and multiple MIMO Z-IC appear.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
